Taking Your Scrapbook Digital: Things to Consider

Scrapbooking is undergoing a revolution. Increasingly, diehard scrapbooking hobbyists have taken a turn from traditional scrapbooking, by hand, to using software to digitally create pages. Digital scrapbooking is a great way to manipulate and preserve pages, working on them as many times as necessary to achieve a unique look. This is the goal of creating pages traditionally; however digital pages give you the ability to look at many different backgrounds and layouts before making the decision to print a page. This is attractive to many enthusiasts because it eliminates waste and mess, saves on money, and alleviates trips to the store. Pages are simply saved on the computer versus taking up space. If all of these reasons are appealing, there are a few things to think about before digitally creating your first scrapbook page.

Software is obviously the most important tool. A variety of scrapbook software is available, with prices range starting at $45. Don't break the bank to find great digital software, but spend enough to have the range of creativity you desire. Prices are typically higher on products that allow you to design your own embellishments. When looking online for a product, take advantage of the trial period available and test out the product before purchase. After finding software, learn the simple functions first and move onto more complex functions later. Get a good grasp of the software before downloading a theme or different kits available online.

Once you've mastered your software and you understand the ins and outs of the product, download images while following the unspoken rules of the scrapbooking community. If you truly love a download make sure to give credit to the website that created the images. The same rule applies for copying a layout from an album you saw online or in a magazine. If you copy the layout make sure to give credit to the artist.

Remember, above all, to stay organized. You will no longer have the physical disorganization of supplies like card stock and paper; however it is still possible to become disorganized. When digital pictures are taken, make small notes about the day for later explanations and writing. You can easily go back to the notes and use them when creating pages. Make sure to keep up with albums and do not let them go for several months. Similarly, while there are no punches lying around creating a physical mess, you also want to keep your computer's hard drive tidy.

When it's time to print your pages, there are a variety of options available. Unless you plan on making pages outside of the traditional 12x12 scrapbook page size, or plan on card making, your best bet is to find one of any number of online vendors available to print pages.
