Everywhere we turn, we see news stories of workers who have lost their jobs or whose hours have been cut back. Today the story was about nannies. Nannies in Los Angeles are making half of what they made a year again, even nannies to the stars. That's because belt-tightening has a trickle-down effect. Even people whose incomes haven't been affected are economizing, just in case economic woes come their way.
Fewer employment opportunities exist this year than a year or two years ago. But many budding entrepreneurs are finding money and employment from the comfort of their own homes.
Working from home falls into four basic categories:
1. Owning a business. If you're interested in home business opportunities you can start your own business or buy into an existing business.
2. Working for a business. The Internet it full of opportunities to make money taking surveys, making phone calls, doing data entry, etc.
3. Peddling a skill. Freelance marketplaces connect skilled individuals with others in need of skilled work.
4. Buying and selling. If you know the value of consumer products you can buy in bulk and sell at a profit.
Working at home has many benefits, but it also has its downsides. On the positive side, you don't have transportation costs and you have a flexible schedule. For the most part you can work whenever you want-day or night. No one is looking over your shoulder every day. When your money and employment are based on work you do at home, you are your own boss and you can see the results of your hard work. You can put your ideas and creativity to work.
On the other hand, working at home can be lonely. You might miss the conversations around the water cooler and the support of co-workers. Plus you have to make room for your office in your home. If you have other family members around, it's hard to avoid interruptions. And if your business fails, no one shares the burden and disappointment with you.
Home workers rarely get benefits; that means no paid holidays, sick time, or vacations and no retirement plans. You'll have to arrange your own health insurance, too.
Despite the potential problems with working from home, in today's economic climate, home business opportunities can be the solution to your financial problems. Before you sign any papers or put any money down, make sure you know what you're getting involved in. Make sure you understand what your financial obligations are now and will be in the future. Confirm the income expectations and find out if others have actually made that much. Check with the Better Business Bureau and government agencies to make sure the company is legitimate. Ask a lawyer or accountant to look over the company's financial statements.
There are plenty of reputable businesses out there with solid opportunities for making money from a home-based business. But there are scams too. Make sure you're signing up with one of the good ones. That's the first step to making money from a home business opportunity.
